LAS Conference

haha ... months since I enter a blog entry ... I was too busy with the DL implementation, I am enjoying every bit of the implementation actually, despite the occational complains of too much work :P

Anyway, this entry is about the LAS conference held in Singapore Poly (8, 9 May) that I attended. This is the first LAS conference that I attended and I am trilled to see my old friends in Temasek Poly =)

The content, was however a dissapointment, it did not meet my expectation as most of the things have been showed case in prior conferences. The one thing that stood out was Prof Kishore, Dean from Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy speech about reading and library.

Prof Kishore, was introduced as the first president scholar from neighbourhood school. And the secret, he is a bookworm in the Aljunied Public Library. The speech was inspiring and Dr Prasad, CEO of NLB introduced Prof Kishore book - Can Asia Think - which Prof Kishore boldly describe the rise of Asia above the west. I was inspired and look at his remark in BBC - Hardtalk program, where he tactfully pin down the BBC commentor when pressed that there is no democracy in Singapore. He responded by saying - which standard? The west is judging us by their standard, that is the problem ... he cited the example of slavery in the west which takes hundred of years to be abolished, when we compare this to the speedy democracy development we see in Asia today, we are more advanced than the west ... how true!

Anyway, if I were to summarise 3 things I learnt in LAS, it is:

1) The autoconnection to straits times and business times through Ezproxy config - the presentation by Peik Keng.
2)Reading, reading & reading still plays an important part!!!
3)We should anticipate what the library users of the future wants, innovation is now the key!!! To me, it is pointless to develop Web 2.0 to compete with FaceBook, etc for users attention; instead, we can develop pieces of widget that allows user to plug our applications into their facebook portal.
